Whisper Number Much Higher
(CHRISPINE.ORG) - After many hours of number crunching in dark smoke filled rooms, the Paramount executives discuss projections for opening weekend and make decisions on what numbers may justify another sequel or possible trilogy.
If pre-sales are any indication, Star Trek is anticipated to be another big box office hit. According to Fandango, the film has already sold out in over 100 locations nationwide. Star Trek pre-sale tickets were accounting for 91% overall ticket sales as of Thursday May 7, which is higher than "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" during last week's cycle.
The box office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations expects Star Trek to make around $60 million opening weekend. "This is a reboot. This is essentially the first film in a series that needs to earn that audience back," says Chad Hartigan of Exhibitor Relations.
A modest Star Trek debut of $60 million would eclipse other reboots such as Batman Begins ($48.7 million in 2005) and Superman Returns ($52.5 million in 2006). Star Trek has up to May 21st to make in impact before the other major sequels "Terminator Salvation" and "Night at the Museum" draw away ticket sales.
